RANDOM DRUG TEST RESULTS PRESENTED TO SCHOOL BOARD
PLYMOUTH -- Eleven out of 137 Plymouth High School students randomly tested
last year came up with "positives" for nicotine and other drugs.
The results showing 5.1 percent, or seven students, tested positive for
nicotine, and another four, or 2.9 percent, for other drugs were presented
by Dick Tobias, principal, to the board of trustees Thursday night.
Tobias said it is the eighth year for the random testing program, which was
halted from March 2000 to May 2002, pending the outcome of an out-of-state
court case.
The purpose of the program is to identify students who may have a drug or
alcohol problem, give them reasons to seek treatment, and to create an
environment where all students can study chemical-free.
Only students who drive a motorized vehicle to school, who participate in
athletics, and/or who are involved in school-sponsored extracurricular
activities are included in the drug testing pool, Tobias said.
