ANOTHER SHAMEFUL 'HUNTING SEASON' OPENS AS THAILAND KICKS OFF NEW WAR
ON DRUGS
Now that the Prime Minister has opened hunting season again,
presumably going for drug peddlers, are we to expect another 2,600
deaths, just like last year? And when he gave the clear instruction
"This time we go for the kill", does that mean last year's victims
were only for target practice?
The shameful (at least for Thailand) events of last year resulted in
the deaths of a large number of possibly innocent people, who
apparently were considered to have been obstacles to some
weapon-wearing officials and other influential people.
So with the elections coming at the end of the year, can we expect
lots of opposition canvassers to be pinpointed and executed as
suspected drug dealers? That would fit perfectly with our leader's
guarantee to get more than 400 seats in the next parliament.
And will all those killed have a small pack of drugs falling out of
their pockets as proof that the police are always willing to help
justice run its course?
And let's not forget the bounty! Assets of declared drug peddlers have
been put up for grabs, even before any court or the Anti Monday
Laundering Organisation agreed to such a measure. Last year's hunt
weeded out the competition, leaving a monopoly in uniform dress. What
will be left after this year?
