I don't think Carl Anderson, a daily pot smoker, completed his
thought when he wrote: "The only authority that anyone has over you
is that which is given them." Given them by whom? As written, it
suggests that everyone has authority over poor Carl, as long as
someone or something gives it.
An incomplete thought in the passive voice -- spoken like a true pot smoker.
