INVEST IN EDUCATION, NOT IN PRISONS
Kudos to Robert Sharpe for his outstanding letter: "Many states fighting
overcrowded prisons" (3-23-04). I'd like to add that, generally, the more a
state spends on education, the less that state will need to spend on prisons.
As an example, Minnesota spends the most per capita on education and less
per capita than any other state on prisons.
On the other hand, Louisiana spends the most per capita on prisons and less
than any other state per capita on education.
Prisons and schools compete for the same limited tax dollars. Which is the
better investment, prisons or schools?
