PREVENTING GROW-OPS TAKES CARE

To the editor:

I have just finished reading the article on whether landlords should pay
for the cost of grow-op busts-YOU BET ("Landlords could be on hook for
costs of grow-op busts," March 21).

Reading that this house has been used for a grow-op twice in the past
surprised me. Why should we be on the hook due to the negligence of the
owner? When people purchase a home with the sole purpose of rental income
in mind, they must be prepared to do what it takes to ensure they are not
duped into renting to the "nice couple" while their friends move in.

How about the insurance companies? Rates are sure to sky-rocket if the
premises are not occupied by the owner.

I am tired of hearing we must all pay for the mistakes of others. If
renting houses is so lucrative, pay for your own mistakes.

A suggestion would be to get to know the neighbours-we will report odd
activity to the owner if a phone number is given. How about driving to the
house to pick up the rent?

If everyone continues to think this won't happen near you-think again. It
starts with caring about the neighbourhood you live in-keeping it clean
front and back, plus getting to know your neighbours.
