N.C. WOULD BENEFIT FROM INDUSTRIAL HEMP
If marijuana becomes a legal substance, its first cousin, industrial
hemp, could replace tobacco as the most valuable crop grown in North
Carolina. Industrial hemp can provide fiber (from rope to cloth to
paper), as well as food and biofuels. N.C. farmers could harvest
perhaps two or three crops in a single growing season.
Industrial hemp was grown in the U.S. until the drug wars started in
the 20th century. Hemp was in our past, and it can be in our future.
