CANNABIS: SMOKE IT, TOKE IT, SPREAD IT ON YOUR BREAD

Latvia has finally made a meaningful contribution to the world:
cannabis butter.

Cannabis, more commonly known for producing a certain illegal smoking
substance that was celebrated last Tuesday, is apparently useful if
your morning toast is a bit on the dry side.

The recipe is apparently centuries old, and farmers have been making
the spread for quite a while.

The spread is made from cannabis seeds, and although marijuana is
illegal in Latvia, the cannabis butter is not.

This is truly innovation at its best - taking an illegal substance and
finding a way to legally grow the plant by making butter out of its
seeds.

It seems to me like this idea might have been aided by a munchie binge
after partaking of the other part of the plant:

"Hey, man, this Dorito and Oreo sandwich is great, but you know what's
missing? Butter. Think we can make some out of this green stuff?"

According to taipeitimes.com, cannabis spread can last for up to six
months. That's a much more impressive shelf life than, say, a box of
Blue Bonnet.

Dainis Lagzdins, a Latvian farmer, is a fan of the cannabis spread
that, according to the article, Finland and Russia have already shown
interest in.

"Mmm, the taste is heavenly," Lagzdins told the Web
site.

Let this be a message to the Drug Enforcement Agency: If other countries
can allow people to grow cannabis - though highly regulated - in order to
make butter from the seeds, maybe the whole "war on drugs" should be
revamped a little.

If people can find an actual beneficial use - other than just feeling
good - for illegal substances, it's time to revisit the legality issue.

Cannabis butter may not be a high demand yet, but once a few thousand
stoners get wind of it, they'll be tearing apart the dairy section at
Kroger like wolverines on speed.

The United States should take a cue from Latvia and lighten up about
this war on drugs thing. After all, how bad can it be if you can
butter your bread with it?
