LEGISLATURE BATTLING DRUGS IN STATE

Montgomery - A bill that would make it harder to produce methamphetamines
moved a step closer to becoming law today by passing the Alabama House of
Representatives.

The Senate bill, which was handled in the House by Rep. John Robinson,
D-Scottsboro, will modify and clarify current law and make it illegal to
knowingly possess sale or transfer precursor chemicals for the intent to
manufacture controlled substances like those used in the manufacturing of
methamphetamines.

Methamphetamines are synthetic stimulants that are produced and sold
illegally has stimulant similar to adrenaline. Like adrenaline,
methamphetamines stimulate the central nervous system, and are extremely
addictive.

"One of the greatest problems facing our state is the proliferation of
methamphetamines," stated Rep. Jimmy Martin, D - Clanton. "We must make
every effort to fight this and all drugs in Alabama."

Additionally, it would establish the Alabama Methamphetamine Abuse Task
Force to develop both education and training programs that will curb the
abuse of precursors used to make methamphetamine.

"This measure will reinforce our intention to work with law enforcement
across this state and give them the tools they need to force the laws as
they battle this epidemic," stated Rep. Martin.

The House will reconvene on Tuesday, May 4, at 1 p.m..
