DRUGS ON THE SIDE?

CANADA'S PRISON gates are wide open to contraband when fast-food deliveries
are allowed, a Conservative MP says. Randy White said there was an incident
at Matsqui federal penitentiary in British Columbia in which a turkey
stuffed with heroin made its way behind bars. Chances of drugs coming in
with large pizza orders are even greater, he said.

"It's not just food that they're ordering in, and the management knows
that," he said.

One guard source said offenders at Ontario's minimum-security Frontenac
Institution were ordering from a local pizza parlour that was doubling as a
drug dealer for the inmates, smuggling in the stuff with food orders.

Correctional Service of Canada spokesman Michele Pilon-Santilli wasn't aware
of any incidents of contraband being brought in with fast food.

Though inmates buy their own fast food, White suggested their cash could be
better spent on reading materials or supporting family members at home.
