DOPE-FEUD DEATH

A man who went public with his battles over booze and drugs has been
charged with the city's seventh murder of the year after a man died
during what sources said was a fight over dope. Calgary police were
called to a home in the city's northeast about 9 p.m. Monday when the
suspect called 911.

"I was standing outside in the backlane when (the accused) was on the
phone," recalled neighbour Shauna Taylor.

"He asked me for a lighter, but I didn't have one."

Taylor said the man did not appear agitated.

"But it feels a little creepy now knowing I was talking to a man
accused of murder," she said.

Police arrived at the suspect's 92 Taradale Close N.E. two-storey home
only to find the body of 34-year-old Chester Junior Morris in the
detached garage at the back of the house.

"The victim died because of head wounds," said Calgary police Staff
Sgt. Barry Cochran of the homicide unit.

Cops did say they recovered a weapon, but would not say what it
was.

However, investigators believe the homicide was the result of a fight
between the victim and the accused.

Cops were cagey about releasing too many details and Cochran would
only say the two men had "a previous association and may have shared a
common interest."

But Sun sources said the two men were scrapping over a drug deal gone
bad.

Gregory Paul Nakano, 41, of Calgary, was charged with second-degree
murder in the death.

Nakano, a former homeless person, spoke out publicly in 2003 about
battling drug and alcohol demons in the past.

After five years at the Simon House, a city rehab centre, he turned
his life around.

He remains in custody and will appear in Calgary provincial court this
morning.
