Suspended Officer Stands Accused of Lying in 2002 Case

A SUSPENDED Toronto cop facing charges related to the drug squad
scandal has also been charged with perjury. Ned Nebojsa Maodus, 41, a
15-year veteran, is accused of lying during a March 2002 court hearing
in Orangeville.

Maodus allegedly lied while in Orangeville court on charges of sexual
assault, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of assault, uttering
threats and numerous weapons charges.

The OPP allege Maodus claimed he didn't know he was not allowed to
take a police firearm home while he was off-duty, when in fact he knew
the gun should have stayed at work.

Maodus, Staff Sgt. John Schertzer and four other former central drug
officers face a total of 40 criminal charges laid by an internal
affairs task force probing allegations of cash and drug thefts.

In the drug squad case, Maodus is charged with conspiracy to obstruct
justice, assault causing bodily harm, extortion and five counts each
of attempting to obstruct justice.

Maodus and other officers were allowed to take their guns home in 1998
after a New York City-based Jamaican posse had allegedly ordered hits
on them.

Maodus is also charged in Orangeville with two counts each of
possession of cocaine and possession of heroin for the purposes of
trafficking.

He is also charged with possession of Ecstasy. Maodus has been
suspended with pay after his arrest on March 21, 2002. He is living at
his parent's Windsor home under strict bail conditions.
