ANTI-DRUG GROUP TO TAKE ACTION

Campbell River's Community Alcohol and Drug Action Committee (CADAC)
wants to take action.

The CADAC has been working on a number of projects this past year and
the fruits of this labour will be presented to the public on May 27
during the "Alcohol and Drug Misuse in our community...A Day for Action."

The committee will be presenting the results of a research project
conducted last summer, consisting of a needs assessment about
substance abuse and its related impacts in this community. Also, CADAC
has compiled both a comprehensive Community Social Services Directory
and an Alcohol and Drug Resources Booklet, detailing the services and
programs available for local people. These documents will be launched
at the community day and distributed free of charge.

The keynote speaker for the action day will be prominent research and
health promoter Dr. Colin Mangham.

Formerly a professor at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia and a
researcher at the Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre, Mangham
has worked in B.C. for the better part of a decade, serving as the
director of Prevention Source B.C. Mangham will be speaking on how to
prevent substance misuse problems at a community level.

Here's the best part, as its name suggests, this is more than just a
day for presentations. Community members attending A Day for Action
will also have an opportunity to become involved by moving ideas into
actions.

Participants will work in small groups to develop ideas and strategies
aimed at using existing or new community resources to reduce the
impact of drug and alcohol misuse in our community.

This will be an opportunity to really make a difference by shaping the
future direction of CADAC's activities and our community's response to
tackling substance abuse and the effects it has in Campbell River.

A Day for Action will be held at the Campbell River Community Centre
on 11th Street, in two sessions. The daytime session will include
small group action planning work, and will be held from 10 a.m.-3
p.m., with lunch provided.

An evening session will also be held from 7-9 p.m., and will consist
of presentations only.

Pre-register for the daytime session by calling 286-0955. Everyone is
welcome to attend, and there is no cost.
