RESEARCHERS GET FUNDS TO STUDY CHILDREN'S USE OF INTOXICANTS

Oregon Research Institute, a Eugene-based nonprofit research center, has
received two large National Institutes of Health grants to study children's
use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs.

Judy Andrews, a senior scientist at ORI, received a five-year, $2.6 million
grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse to study children's
knowledge of and intent to use tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and inhalants.
The grant continues research begun with Springfield grade-schoolers.
Researchers plan to track the same children from sixth grade to one year
after high school. The work will help design substance-abuse prevention
programs.

ORI also received a $4 million, five-year grant from the National Cancer
Institute to study tobacco use among Oregon high school students. ORI
senior scientist Anthony Biglan and his colleagues will study the effects
of state tobacco control practices and other factors on tobacco use among
high school and middle school students in Oregon.
