POLICE NEED HELP IN ANTI-DRUGS DRIVE

Dubai Police has displayed its informed sense of timing and proactive
nature yet again. In a series of campaigns pegged to International
Anti-Narcotics Day, on June 26, Dubai Police will educate young people on
the harmful effects of drugs.

To be sure, the fight against drugs will be decidedly hard and long. As a
spokesperson for the police has observed, traffickers at all levels, who
continue to thrive at the expense of wasted young lives, keep finding
ingenious ways of moving their poison.

One of the most potent methods traffickers use to win new recruits is peer
pressure. It is this that makes an impressionable teenager -- or even
"tween-ager" -- "sample" such substances for the first time. Regrettably,
before long, more than a few first-timers join the ranks of the regulars.

Given this frightening scenario, it is incumbent on parents to be
ultra-vigilant on the whereabouts and doings of their charges, especially
during the long summer break.
