NDLEA DESTROYS N12M DRUGS

Abeokuta, Ogun - National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State
chapter, has burnt a total of 12 tonnes of narcotics worth N12 million,
which were confiscated by the Agency from suspected drug traffickers within
the last nine months.

The public burning of the narcotics was carried out at the MKO Abiola Trade
Fair Complex, Kobape Road, Abeokuta.

The destruction, which was the first of its kind in the state under the new
commander, Mr. Layi Adekanmbi, included Indian hemp, cocaine and other
drug-related substances concealed in bags.

According the NDLEA, most of the young men involved in the drug abuse were
citizens of the state whose future are being ruined.

While linking drug addiction to the deadly Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome (AIDS), NDLEA Chairman, Alhaji Bello Lafiaji, represented by his
Director General, Mr. Dave Ashang, said "drug addicts go into illicit sex
more easily. He described war against illicit drugs as a collective
responsibility, noting that the awareness is just beginning to crystallise.

The NDLEA boss expressed his Agency's appreciation to governments and
people of the state, for their assistance in fighting the menace.

While describing the burning of the exhibit as symbol of the Agency's
collective resolve to tame the menace, he said in response to the growing
spread of the drug problems, the Agency has reached new levels of
understanding with the state government to tackle the scourge head on.
