CONVENIENT MALFUNCTION
Last August, Ryan Wilson, 22, died after being
shot in the back by a Lafayette cop's stun gun. Wilson, suspected of
growing marijuana, was fleeing police when Officer John Harris fired a
Taser at him, ending his life. The coroner ruled that Wilson's death
was the result of an abnormal heartbeat combined with the Taser shot
and physical exertion. Harris was exonerated of wrongdoing - and given
a desk job.
Still, disturbing questions remain. Although Harris claims he warned
Wilson that he was about to fire, witnesses say otherwise. So who's
telling the truth?
Sadly, the one infallible witness in the case - the video camera
mounted on Harris' squad car - somehow malfunctioned during the
critical period in which Wilson was killed, meaning that we will never
know.
Harris told investigators that the camera somehow shut down prior to
the incident, while his superiors claimed that it mysteriously
malfunctioned after having worked properly prior to the stun-gun incident.
Just a coincidence, right?
And a damned convenient one.
