HYDRO COMPANIES SPREAD WORD ABOUT IDENTIFYING GROW-OPS

Local Hydro Companies Have Teamed Up With Crime Stoppers To Cut The
Power On Marijuana Grow-Ops.

"Grow-ops cost the community, because we end up footing the bill,"
said Jennifer Kinsella, police co-ordinator for Crime Stoppers of
Simcoe, Dufferin and Muskoka.

Hydro companies will distribute educational pamphlets to raise public
awareness about how to spot grow-operations in the community.

"The public can expect to see the flyers shortly, as three hydro
companies will be delivering the flyers with their bill envelopes,"
Kinsella said.

"A lot of people have this going on with neighbours and don't know
it," said Joanne Gates, president of Crime Stoppers of Simcoe,
Dufferin and Muskoka.

There are many other ways of detecting grow-ops aside from spikes in
power bills.

"You may notice closed blinds, extra people coming and going, a
skunk-like smell, and money being passed, to name a few," Gates said.

Barrie Hydro, along with Innisfil Hydro, Orillia Power and Collus in
Collingwood have teamed up with Crime Stoppers and Quality Print to
raise awareness about this growing safety hazard.

"I think it will surprise people to know there are grow houses in
their community. It seems to be a growing trend," said Mark
Henderson, president and ceo of Barrie Hydro.

If people suspect a grow-op, they are encouraged to call Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
