COUNTY GETS $285,000 FOR FIGHTING METH

Marshall County has been awarded $285,000 to battle illegal drug use
and distribution.

The grant, from the U.S. Dept. of Justice to the state, will enable
the county's drug enforcement unit to hire an additional agent to
address increased methamphetamine use and distribution.

The money will also train agents in the safe investigation and
destruction of meth laboratories.

"This sends a strong message that trafficking and distribution of
illegal drugs, and the violent crime that is often associated with
drugs, will not be tolerated," said Gov. Bob Riley.

"I commend local officers for their efforts to rid the county of
illegal drugs, and I am pleased to award this grant."

Rob Savage, director of the Marshall County Drug Enforcement Unit
(MCDEU), said he was pleased to hear the news.

"I appreciate what the governor has done," Savage said. "This will
allow us to continue to address the growing meth problem."

An additional agent will significantly strengthen MCDEU's ability to
conduct undercover and investigative operations.

The funds will also be used for undercover operations that will target
the distribution of crack cocaine, marijuana and prescription drug
fraud.

The task force plans to continue its campaign to rid schools of
narcotics by educating students about the dangers of illegal drug use
and conducting unannounced school inspections.

A press release from the governor's office stated Marshall County
Commision Chairman Billy Cannon was aware the grant had been approved,
and local matching funds of $95,000 have been committed to the effort.
