POLLSMOOR WARDER CAUGHT WITH FIVE PARCELS OF DAGGA

A junior warder at Pollsmoor Prison's admissions centre is in custody
after he was allegedly caught with five parcels of dagga.

When alert senior officials noticed the man acting suspiciously as he
reported for duty at 7am yesterday they searched him and allegedly
found the drug.

Correctional Services spokesman Eddie Johnson said they contacted the
police and the man, a junior officer, was taken to Kirstenhof police
station.

"His name cannot be disclosed and the matter is now being investigated
by the SA Police Service. We have routine searches but suspicious
behaviour draws immediate attention," Johnson said.

"His arrest is a boost to our attempts to weed out corrupt elements
within the system. We are aware that some officials fall prey to wrong
influences within the correctional system, but any attempt to
compromise them in the execution of their duties should be reported."

He could not say where the dagga came from.

In a further warning to corrupt officials, Johnson said: "Officials
must realise that no stone will be left unturned to weed them out."

West metropole police spokesman William Reid said a case of possession
of dagga was being investigated.

"He is being held in custody at Kirstenhof police station and will
appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court tomorrow," Reid said.
