LEGALIZE MARIJUANA FOR REVENUE: FRASER INSTITUTE
A Fraser Institute study says B.C.'s annual marijuana crop is worth $7
billion on the street, so why not collect the taxes?
The organization suggests decriminalizing pot, treating it like any
legal product and taxing the revenue, adding a potential $2 billion
annually to government coffers.
Stephen Easton, a Simon Fraser University economics professor and
Fraser Institute senior fellow who authored the study, estimates there
are 17,500 marijuana grow ops in the province of which police bust
approximately 3,000 annually with relatively minor consequences for
those convicted.
Easton says the broader social question is no longer whether British
Columbians approve or disapprove of local production, but who shall
enjoy the spoils.
