TREATMENT FIRST

In response to the May 22 editorial "Cut drug demand; Pence should seek
funds for treatment":

This is an important issue that needs to be addressed. I am a member of
Kick Alcohol Drug Dependency, a non-profit organization founded to direct
chemically dependent individuals to rehabilitation centers. We assist
confidentially on a personal level and provide a Web site to assist on a
private level.

We have opened an office/support facility at Clay City, where we will
provide Alcoholic Anonymous, Narcotic Anonymous and parent support
meetings. Our ultimate goal is to open a rehabilitation center. Our
strategic plan includes offering long-term treatment, providing the
combination of rehabilitation and job training to help clients re-enter
society successfully.

The editorial said that "expanding treatment is the first and obvious
step." We agree and sincerely believe that by eliminating the need for
drugs, you will eliminate the supply. Our past approach has been on both
ends of the candle. Drug prevention for youth and jail time for our
offenders. Why not focus on the middle?

People must understand that the war on drugs is a reality. There are no
professional or social boundaries, making it an issue that could penetrate
every family. Sex slaves in foreign countries are unacceptable in our
society. Would I get your attention by telling you that it is happening
within the drug trade in our communities?
