SUSPECTED DRUG TRAFFICKERS ARRESTED IN KILIFI

Nairobi

Activities came to a standstill at Kilifi town centre on Saturday
morning when anti-narcotics police raided a local business and
arrested five people suspected to be drug traffickers.

The plain clothes officers arrived at a Kilifi bus stage at 10am and
mingled about, pretending to be travellers, but kept an eye on the
business venue.

They spotted one of the suspects go in, and immediately swung into
action. After about half an hour in the outlet, they emerged with the
suspects.

News of their arrest spread like bush-fire, with a number of leaders
working frantically to secure their release.

The Nation learnt that one of the suspects, a local politician, was
taken to Kijipwa police station for questioning, while the other four
were held at the Kilifi police station.

The arrests come just one month after Kilifi district commissioner
Chelimo Cheboi instructed police to crack down on a drug syndicate
involving transporters on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Mr Cheboi said some long-distance transporters, including buses, carry
bhang from up-country to Kilifi District.
