SERVING TIME
Correctional Population Sets A Record
The number of Americans either in prison or jail, on probation or
parole, is at 6.9 million - a record high, according to the justice
department.
That is 130,700 more people than last year.
While the crime rate has stabilized in recent years, the "correctional
population" has risen.
Experts trace the increase to tougher sentencing laws drafted in the
1990s that have caused offenders to serve longer terms.
The numbers amount to 3.2 percent of the adult population - a lot of
people under control of the criminal justice system.
