JUDGE'S SON CHARGED IN DRUG CASE

A special prosecutor has charged the son of a state appellate judge
with possession of heroin with intent to sell.

Michael Curley Jacobs, 20, son of Judge Patricia S. Curley, was
arrested in July for possessing less than 3 grams of heroin with the
intent to sell. He was charged July 20.

The charges filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court carry a maximum
penalty of $25,000 in fines and 12 1/2 years in prison upon
conviction. Jacobs could get an additional four years in prison as a
repeat offender; he pleaded guilty to theft and receiving stolen
property in May and was convicted of misdemeanor drug charges in 2002.

Washington County District Attorney Todd Martens assumed the role of
special prosecutor after Milwaukee County prosecutors recused
themselves from the case to avoid any appearances of a conflicts of
interest, Martens said. Curley was a circuit judge in Milwaukee from
1978 to 1996.
