CUSTOMS AGENT ARRESTED IN SMUGGLING
EL PASO -- A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent was arrested
Friday after being indicted on charges that she allowed more than a
ton of marijuana to be smuggled into the United States, federal
prosecutors said.
Margarita Crispin was arrested at a port of entry in downtown El Paso.
She was indicted on a single count of conspiracy to import a
controlled substance, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.
Crispin is accused of allowing loads of marijuana through her port of
entry lanes since June 2003. Prosecutors say she allowed at least
2,200 pounds of marijuana to be smuggled into the U.S.
Crispin was jailed Friday in El Paso and is scheduled to make an
initial court appearance Monday. It is unclear if she has a lawyer.
