23 COPS FACE AX FOR ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

AT least 23 policemen who were reportedly involved in extortion and
other illegal activities have been arrested by authorities since
Interior and Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes promised to
cleanse the PNP last month.

According to Supt. Jun Cruz, deputy chief of the PNP Public
Information Office (PIO), the arrest came after Reyes launched an
intensified campaign against "bad eggs" of the police organization
since he took over as DILG secretary last month.

Cruz said, 12 of the 23 cops were from the National Capital Region
Police Office (NCRPO) while six were from the PNP Traffic Management
Group (TMG).

The official said that all the arrested policemen will have to defend
themselves in the proper court.

The three Mandaluyong policemen - SPO3 Rode Castetone, PO1 Jefferson
Gonzatee and PO1 Salvador del Mundo, all of the Anti-Narcotics Unit,
and an errand boy - were arrested inside the Mandaluyong City police
for allegedly extorting money in exchange for the liberty of a drug
suspect.
