EXPECT NO CRISIS WITH MEDICAL MARIJUANA
Your point is well taken in a recent editorial ("Primary Effects: In
Detroit, a challenge to all on medical marijuana," Aug. 5). Now that the
Detroit proposal to allow for the medical use of marijuana has been
approved by the voters, confrontations and extreme actions on both sides of
the issue should be avoided.
What is far more likely to happen, though, will be the drug war
cheerleaders' worst nightmare: nothing.
Rates of teenage marijuana use will not spike, there will be no
up-tick in drive-by shootings or gang violence, marijuana dens will
not spring up on every corner. Civilization will not end, and life
will go on. This is the message opponents of medical marijuana fear
the most.
