METH SUPPORT GROUP HELPS PEOPLE KICK THE HABIT
For those who are struggling with methamphetamine problems, there is
now a self-help recovery group available.
The group has been meeting on a weekly basis since its formation in
May, said Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) Edson area
supervisor Edith Zuidhof-Knoop.
Meetings are every Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Edson
Friendship Centre. Child care services are available.
"The majority who have been attending have been dealing with meth
issues," said Zuidhof-Knoop, adding other addictions are often touched
on, but the main focus is on meth.
Meanwhile, the meth problem continues in the Edson area, but news of
another addiction is starting to show up in the region.
"We're beginning to see the beginnings of OxyContin addiction," said
Zuidhof-Knoop.
OxyContin is a strong narcotic pain reliever, similar to morphine. The
drug can only be prescribed by physicians for moderate to extreme
pain. It can be highly-addictive if not used properly and monitored by
a doctor.
Misuse can result in serious injury and death.
Check out the AADAC booth during the Edson and District Chamber of
Commerce Sidewalk Jamboree Aug. 26 to 28. And if you're a youth
between the ages of 12 and 20, it could really be worth your while.
All you have to do is fill out a youth survey on drugs and you'll be
eligible for a draw for a mountain bike.
While at the booth ask about the Drug Proof Your Kids course, which
takes place Oct. 2 and 16.
