DARE SHOOTOUT SET FOR AUG. 28

On Saturday, Aug. 28, beginning at 8 a.m., the Nolan County Parents'
Association and the Nolan County Sheriff's Office, in association with the
Nolan County 4-H Shooting Sports, will sponsor the eighth annual DARE Shootout.

The shootout is the Nolan County Drug Abuse Resistance Education program's
only fundraiser to support the program for Blackwell, Highland and Roscoe
schools. Currently, the program is for the seventh, fifth and
pre-kindergarten through fourth grades.

DARE is currently taught in all 50 states and several foreign countries.
The program has very structured lessons including such topics as
consequences, self-esteem, decision making, personal beliefs and behaviors,
stress and conflict management, gang violence and prevention, positive
alternatives, personal commitment, drug effects/identification, peer
pressure and ways to say no.

The cost of the Nolan County DARE program and in-service training is paid
for by the Nolan County Sheriff's Office and Nolan County. The Nolan County
Parent's Association funds two scholarships to each of the three county
schools and the giveaways to the DARE students. In the past seven years,
the shootout has cleared over $2,000.

There has been much community support and involvement, without which this
program could not have had the success it has had, organizers said.

The shootout will consist of five member teams shooting at two hour
intervals from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a championship shoot-off scheduled at
6 p.m.

There will be the 30-Bird Plush and Snooker fun games held during the
event. Winners of the fun shoots win the "pot," which is money divided in
half (one half going to DARE and the other to the winners).

Location for the Shootout is the Rattlesnake Ridge Sporting Clays -- one
mile west of Sweetwater on I-20, exit 240. Signs will be posted for easy
assistance.

For information on fees, or to form a team, call the Nolan County Sheriff's
Office at 235-5471. Deputy Connie Moore will be the contact person. Early
registration is recommended and reservations will be accepted.
