NEW PRODUCT COULD DETER METH DEMAND

A new additive to anhydrous ammonia to discourage methamphetamine use and
allow for easier detection of users should be used in southcentral Kentucky.

The product, GloTell, has been used on a experimental basis thus far and
has proven to be effective.

When drug users snort or inject methamphetamine that was cooked with
anhydrous ammonia containing GloTell, their skin will turn pink.

Even if the stain is washed off, ultraviolet light can detect the product
24 to 72 hours later.

Methamphetamine use has been an increasing problem in our area and
throughout the state.

GloTell shows true promise.

Maybe this will discourage drug users from stealing anhydrous ammonia, cut
down on the demand for the drug and increase its cost.

We encourage all sellers of anhydrous ammonia to add GloTell to their product.

Law enforcement officials say the product seems to be successful in other
states.

Tommy Loving, director of the Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force,
said GloTell would discourage the use of anhydrous ammonia in the
methamphetamine manufacturing process, which could help ease the overall
meth problem. He also said that meth recipes that don't call for anhydrous
ammonia are generally harder to make.

During product testing, GloTell was added to anhydrous ammonia tanks at
farms that had been having problems with meth thefts in Illinois, Kentucky
and Indiana. Within a week, the thefts stopped.

The proof that GloTell is effective is there, so let's begin using it
before the problem gets worse.
