POT-GROWING SITES PUT INSURANCE AT RISK
The article, House fire leads to marijuana find (Sept. 5), raises the
issue of insurance coverage for houses damaged or destroyed resulting
from the increased risk of fire at these operations.
In the event the homeowner is participating in the illegal
marijuana-growing operation, there would be no insurance coverage for
any resulting damage.
Due to the ever-increasing numbers of this type of occurence, many
insurance companies now exclude coverage completely.
If the owner rents or leases the premises to someone who, without the
owner's knowledge, commences a pot-growing operation that results in a
subsequent fire or other damage to the premises, the owner has no
coverage for the loss.
Obviously, the owner must not only know who they rent or lease the
premises to, but continue to be a vigilant and observant landlord.
Otherwise, their investment could be in jeopardy.
