POT SMUGGLERS ESCAPE CAPTURE
Millions of dollars worth of pot was seized when two men tried to
sneak into the country, east of Langley.
A pair of pot smugglers from Canada lost $2.4 million US worth of
marijuana to American border patrol agents on Sept. 9, but escaped
capture.
A Customs and Border Protection agent from the Lynden, Washington,
station was on foot patrol along the border when he spotted a
suspicious man in the local raspberry fields.
The man headed back north into Canada, west of Columbia Road in
Abbotsford, and a short time later a white Ford pick up truck with a
canopy drove across the border and into the berry field.
The agent startled the driver, who tried to turn around and flee
north. Unfortunately for the smugglers, their truck got stuck during
the U-turn.
The driver and a passenger fled on foot.
"They both managed to elude police on both sides of the border," said
Abbotsford Police Constable Shinder Kirk.
In the truck, border patrol officers found 11 hockey bags packed with
680.9 pounds of B.C. marijuana. The truck had stolen licence plates.
One of the suspects is described as wearing a black shirt and blue
jeans, and the other is simply described as short with dark hair.
