PEARSON DRUG SEIZURES MAKE FOR A BUSY MONTH
It's been a busy month for Pearson International Airport (PIA)
authorities who have seized more than $9 million in heroin alone in
the past two weeks.
On top of the heroin busts, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)
officers at the airport recently seized large quantities of marijuana
and cocaine in two separate incidents.
On Oct. 5, CBSA officers found two kilograms of marijuana, with a
street value of over $40,000, hidden inside a box of crackers in the
possession of a 27-year-old Japanese man on a flight from Jamaica.
Two days later, customs officials nabbed just over three kilograms of
cocaine off a 65-year-old Toronto woman, who had woven the drugs into
a wicker basket.
Upon further examination, officials found 500 grams hidden on her
person and 250 grams they say she had ingested.
The street value of the cocaine is well over $500,000.
Both individuals have been charged with importing a controlled
substance.
So far this year, PIA customs officials have made over 610 drug busts,
totalling more than $103 million.
