LOCAL SCHOOLS TO OBSERVE RED RIBBON WEEK

In order to raise youth awareness on living a healthy, drug-free
lifestyle, the STAR Council on Substance Abuse and the Department of
State Health Services (DSHS) are joining forces and will host a number
of activities at area schools in observance of "Red Ribbon Week."

"Red Ribbon Week is a chance to be visible and vocal in our desire for
a drug-free community," Rachel Ganther of STAR Council said in a press
release. "Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol
and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and
consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse."

Stephenville Mayor Rusty Jergins signed a proclamation declaring Oct.
23-31 as "Red Ribbon Week in Stephenville. It is the goal of the Texas
Red Ribbon Campaign and the City of Stephenville to involve families,
schools, business, churches, law enforcement agencies and service
organizations in all aspects of this campaign and establish an
atmosphere that supports awareness, education and on-going initiatives
to prevent illegal drug use," the proclamation stated.
