RED RIBBON WEEK WILL BE OBSERVED IN ABERDEEN SCHOOLS

A number of activities are taking place in Aberdeen schools this week
as part of Red Ribbon Week.

The week honors the memory of Drug Enforcement Administration special
agent "Kiki" Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985.

According to a release, this week's activities are organized by school
drug and alcohol prevention counselors "as a way for students and the
community to take a visible stand against drugs and to help students
make a personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol
of the red ribbon. Students in Aberdeen will be sporting red ribbons
during this week, showing their desire to remain drug-free."

Holgate: Holgate Middle School will distribute red ribbons, hold a poster
contest for home rooms, do a public service announcement with Peer Helpers,
have a Wear Red Day and build a Wall Against Drugs. In the latter project,
students are given "stone" cutout on which they put their names and what
they do instead of using drugs.

Simmons: Simmons Middle School will distribute red ribbons, build a Wall
Against Drugs, do a PSA with Student Senate and have dress-up days: Wear
Red Day, Sock It to Drugs Day and Wear Crazy Socks Day.

Roncalli: Roncalli students will build a Wall Against Drugs, wear red
ribbon bracelets showing that they are making a commitment to not use drugs
and will be encouraged to wear sunglasses during school on Thursday, which
is "Shade Out Drugs Day." They will also have a chance on Friday to win
prizes if they have participated in activities all week by wearing
bracelets or sunglasses.
