DENISON POLICE ARREST EX-POLICE OFFICER ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

Denison narcotics and patrol officers arrested an ex-police officer
Wednesday afternoon on a felony drug charge.

According to Denison Police Lt. Mike Eppler, Denison PD's narcotics team
received information regarding the possibility of drug activity that
included a certain white 1998 Ford pickup. They asked Denison patrol
officers to keep an eye out for the pickup. Eppler said Officer Jason Coley
spotted it in the 400 block of South Crockett about 4 p.m. He stopped it on
a minor traffic violation, then notified narcotics officers he had it
detained. When officers asked for consent to search the pickup, the driver
refused permission.

Eppler said the officers called Sherman K-9 Officer Travis Gann, who took
his drug dog, Oskar, to make a free-air search around the pickup. The dog
alerted, indicating there was the possibility of narcotics in it, Eppler said.

The pickup had a camper shell and the drugs and paraphernalia were found
inside a briefcase inside that camper shell.

There were about 40 grams of white powder that field-tested positive as
methamphetamine, Eppler said. Another approximate 60 grams is being sent to
a forensics lab for analysis. Officers also found $860 in cash, on which
they will begin civil forfeiture procedures, three cell phones, scales,
numerous small plastic bags which are used sometime when drugs are divided
into smaller quantities, some unnamed pills, several glass smoking pipes,
and two butane cigarette lighters.

Eppler said there were no weapons in the suspect's possession. One of the
cigarette lighters was in the shape of a small handgun.

Jailed was David Wayne Stanley, 36, of Bonham.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, which
is the state agency that tests, certifies and keeps track of state-licensed
officers, said Stanley worked as a police officer with the Honey Grove PD
from Aug. 1, 1992, until Sept. 9, 1993. On Sept. 11, 1993, he went to work
with the Denison police department, TCLEOSE said. He resigned from DPD on
Aug. 16, 2001.

The TCLEOSE spokeswoman said that Stanley has let his certification drop
since leaving Denison police. "Our records don't show that he's maintained
his training. He has an expired license," the representative stated.

Stanley was jailed on a charge of manufacture-delivery of a controlled
substance.
