IT WAS A RED LETTER DAY

Three thousand red balloons filled the blue sky over Jackson Township
Monday as students kicked of Red Ribbon Week.

The theme for this year's national event is "Drug Free - I Have the
Power!"

Jackson students also decorated nearly 4,000 grocery bags with an
anti-drug/alcohol, health living message promoting Red Ribbon Week.

The bags decorated by students at Amherst, Lake Cable and Strausser
Elementaries are being given to customers at Fisher Foods on Fulton
Drive Northwest while the work of students at Sauder Elementary and
Jackson Middle School are distributed at the Giant Eagle at The Strip.

The elementary schools also are celebrating a week of themes,
including Red Ribbon Day, Put a Cap on Drugs Day, Sock it to Drugs Day
and Spirit Day - Say Boo to Drugs.

Jackson Middle School students created essays, poems, jingles and raps
in a contest for public service announcements which are being aired
don WHBC 94.1 radio this week.

The Red Ribbon celebration was established as a national awareness
campaign in 1988 after the death of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique
Camaren to take a stand against underage use of alcohol and tobacco
and all use of illegal drugs.
