4 Ethiopians arrested in drug-smuggling case Associated Press
Originally published October 31, 2004 Four Ethiopian men were arrested
Thursday after federal immigration and customs enforcement agents
seized 2,500 pounds of the drug known as khat at the port of
Baltimore. The men were charged with drug smuggling and possession
with intent to distribute.
The drugs arrived by ship and were headed for distribution in
Washington.
Khat, which is chewed or used in tea, is a popular African stimulant
that contains ingredients producing feelings of euphoria.
The ship with the drugs began its journey to the United States in
Ethiopia, officials said.
