RED RIBBON WEEK IS CELEBRATED IN DENISON

Denison schools celebrated red ribbon week to make students aware of the
problems with drugs.

The schools came up with catchy sayings and activities to make a serious
subject fun while still learning something about the dangers of getting
involved with drugs.

Each day was labeled something new and catchy. At Golden Rule Elementary,
Friday wrapped up the promotion with "band against drugs day."

Students and teachers participated by wearing red bands on their wrists and
to further emphasize the event, the Denison High School Touch of Gold Band
and Drill Team were on hand to help the elementary students "band" against
drugs.

Sounds of the high school band filled the elementary school gymnasium along
with excited cheers from the elementary children as the band and drilled
team danced their way into the hearts of the young people and helped
promote a worthy and important message for all school children.

Red ribbon week started in 1988 and is always held the last week of
October. It's the result of friends and family of an assassinated U.S. Drug
Enforcement Administration agent, Enrique "Kiki" Camarena wearing red
badges of satin in honor of Camarena's memory and dedication to the battle
against illegal drugs.

The story was picked up by Time Magazine and the red ribbon symbol soon
became a national movement.
