DEALING WITH DRUG PROBLEM

Editor, The Record:

It would seem that either the editor or the publisher of The Record
feel that (contrary to its previous policy) only persons who are the
purview of New Westminster council shall be allowed space within the
editorial pages in order to criticize them.

If ever there was a city contiguous to its neighbours, it is this city
that rubs shoulders with, or is affiliated to, Burnaby, Richmond,
Delta, Sapperton, Coquitlam and Surrey.

And so I persist in asking if and when Mayor Wayne Wright is finished
planting ceremonial trees and raking leaves, would it be possible that
he turn his attention to the open drug trade that is presently being
conducted (unhindered) at the New West SkyTrain station? Perhaps some
of the newfound taxes being generated at the various casinos could be
directed towards a police presence in that area?

The other weekend, I had to weave my way through a dozen addicts and
dealers at the foot of Eighth and Columbia. On the return trip, I had
the added pleasure of watching a man urinating near the escalators. As
usual, there was no police presence evident.

Larry Bennett,

Surrey

Editor's Note: The Record welcomes letters to the editor. We do, however,
give priority to letters written by residents of New Westminster; that
policy has never changed.
