HERMAN BEING JUDGED BY A FEW BAD APPLES

I'm writing in response to the letter by K. Basden who gave the
impression that the entire student body of Herman Secondary School is
outside in alleyways smoking weed at lunch. You can't judge an entire
group by the actions of a few kids and one narrow-minded opinion.

While I'm not opposed to admitting that there are some students of our
school who break the rules, at the same time there are many more kids
who don't.

As for parents that are supposed to be looking after their children,
in all reality they have no idea what their kids are putting in their
bodies while no one is looking. So what are they supposed to do? Put a
leash on their kids every morning and monitor their every move?

Instead of criticizing all the kids at Herman, how about you start
thanking them? We have classes every day picking up garbage in your
neighbourhood. They do not have to be doing that.

The band puts together a Thanks to the Neighbourhood concert for the
neighbours who have supported the school. All are welcome to attend.

It appears that people are singling out Herman students in particular.
Every school has their bunch of bad apples that are doing the exact
same thing around the city. Why not crack down on all schools, not
just one?

People seem to think that Herman is full of jocks and delinquents
while it is quite the opposite. Herman has a lot of smart children who
are involved and care about their community.

At a recent graduation, three 12th graders were given a combined
$25,000 in scholarships.

And a lot of the teenagers involved in sports work very hard to keep
their grades up, not to mention our concert band of 2003 and 2004 were
national award-winners two years consecutively.
