POT ACTIVIST THROWN IN JAIL

6 Months For Running Grow Op

Pot activist Chris Buors was led away in handcuffs yesterday after being
sentenced to jail for running a marijuana grow operation. "We're in the
Bible Belt so it's exactly what we expected," Buors said.

Queen's Bench Justice Alan MacInnes sentenced Buors to six months in
custody to be followed by three years of probation.

59-PLANT GROW OP

"Each of us is subject to the law regardless of who we are, the position we
hold and our views," MacInnes said.

On Oct. 8, Buors pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana for the purpose
of trafficking.

He was arrested Aug. 29, 2002, for running a 59-plant grow operation
discovered after police were called to his house for a break-in.

During sentencing, MacInnes cited Buor's previous conviction for a similar
offence and lack of remorse as the reason for jail time.

In 1998, Buors was given a 23-month conditional sentence and probation
after pleading guilty to cultivation of marijuana and to possession for the
purpose of trafficking.

MacInnes said there is little chance Buors will be rehabilitated. In fact,
he noted, Buors was caught handing out a newsletter requesting money for
marijuana and growing equipment after his most recent arrest.

The Crown had asked for a year in jail and a fine.

Defence lawyer Bonnie MacDonald had asked MacInnes to give Buors a
conditional sentence because he was growing the drugs for people suffering
from serious illnesses.

Though Buor's motivation may have been compassion, the court couldn't
condone his conduct, MacInnes said.
