TEACHER SUSPENDED AFTER ARREST

A Clark County School District teacher moonlighting as the general
manager of an hourly motel has been suspended with pay pending the
results of an internal investigation into his recent arrest on charges
of drug possession and public nuisance.

Edward Kammer, 55, was cited on misdemeanor charges of possession of
less than an ounce of marijuana and for public nuisance by police on
Saturday night. In addition to his teaching day job, Kammer worked at
the Del Mar Motel, at 1411 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Kammer, a Silverado High School math teacher, also has substituted at
several schools, including Sunset-South High School. He has worked for
the district since 1998.

District officials learned of Kammer's arrest Monday and placed him in
a position that didn't require student contact. On Wednesday,
Associate Superintendent of Human Resources George Ann Rice said
Kammer was placed on paid leave until the district concludes its
inquiry into Kammer's activities. He is paid $49,049 a year.

Rice said Nevada law makes immorality an issue that can lead to an
educator's dismissal.

"One thing teachers are required to do is be a role model for
students," Rice said. "Can someone be a role model for students if
they're participating in questionable activities?"

Since they were misdemeanor arrests, the cases have been forwarded to
the city attorney's office for prosecution.
