MOCKTAIL-DRUG INFO SESSION SUCCESSFUL
Marlboro residents turned out in good numbers on Nov. 20 to find out
all about mocktails, methamphetamine and other drugs.
The Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) and the Edson
RCMP teamed up for the session at the Marlboro Community Hall, which
attracted between 30 and 40 residents.
The event was a success, said AADAC Edson area supervisor Edith
Zuidhof-Knoop.
"I think it was pretty well received. I was really happy with the
turnout."
Zuidhof-Knoop was kept busy throughout the session making mocktails,
non-alcoholic drinks, whose taste resembles their alcoholic
counterparts. She also answered residents' questions relating to
alcohol and drug abuse.
Through the course of the 2 1/2 hour session she made over 100
mocktails, which were enjoyed by a variety of people of all ages.
"There were lots of families there," said Zuidhof-Knoop.
"Having that whole range of family was good as each person brings
strength."
Many of the questions directed her way dealt with how family members
who were having problems with alcohol or drugs could be supported.
Edson RCMP Corp. Rob Diduch was also on hand to answer questions on
drugs, especially meth. He brought with him a display of drug
paraphernalia and related items.
Diduch was equally impressed with the turnout.
"I thought it was well attended considering the size of
Marlboro."
He was impressed with the variety of questions which were directed to
him.
Diduch said people often think meth or other drug issues are problems
in other communities, but this is often not the case.
"It doesn't usually hit home until it directly affects
them."
Zuidhof-Knoop said these sessions are available on request and can be
presented by a variety of community volunteers.
She explained, through the Edson and District Drug Coalition, many of
its members have been trained to give these presentations and are
available to present them throughout the region.
