SHERIFF STEVE EVANS NAMED 'INDIVIDUAL OF THE YEAR'

TOWANDA -- Bradford County Sheriff Steve Evans was shocked Thursday during
the Bradford County commissioners meeting when he was presented with the
WATS/WAVR's 27th annual Joe Wolf Memorial "Individual of the Year" Award.

The award, in the form of a plaque that will hang in the radio station's
lobby, was presented by WATS/WAVR general manager Chuck Carver.

"From the overwhelming tragedy of the loss of the two deputies last March,
to the continuing tragedy that this terrible drug is inflicting on our
communities comes a man who says 'education is the way to beat it,'" Carver
said. "I can't even guess how many hours Sheriff Evans has spent in the
past nine months, speaking to countless groups and opening lots of eyes
about this life destroyer -- methamphetamine."

When asked to say a few words, Evans said he had not been aware he was
receiving the award and was touched by it.

"This is a total shock to me," Evans said. "I'd like to point out there are
a lot of people who consider the meth problem in this county to be a very
serious problem and I would say two of those individuals in particular
would be Chris Burgert and Mike Vankuren. I accept this great honor you
have bestowed upon me in memory of both of them."

The award is named after the late Joe Wolf, a businessman and civic servant
from Sayre, said Carver.

The plaque contains the names of all those who have been honored as
individuals of the year since the award was first given in 1978. Those who
have been honored include: Phil Wells, 1978; Joe Cummings, 1979, Louise
Shallenberger, 1980; Bob Landy, 1981; Betty Hasco, 1982; Dr. John Thomas,
1983; Eleanor Haggerty, 1984; Dr. William Beck, 1985; Al Haines, 1986; Jack
Rhodes, 1987; Walt Cain, 1988; Jim Haggerty, 1989; Joan Smith, 1990; Nick
Chacona, 1991; Hal Lambert, 1992; Habitat for Humanity, 1993; Molly Caplan,
1994; Rev. William Wells, 1995; Bill and Sue Carmalt, 1996; Al Crosby,
1997; The Moving Wall Committee, 1998; Mike Chambers, 1999; Al Englebert,
2000; Leon Thomas, 2001; Dr. Nche Zama, 2002; and Mike Shaw, 2003.
