DRUG ADDICTS DO NOT BELONG IN PRISON CELLS
In response to a letter written by Michael Trotta ("Justice system and
media go overboard coddling criminals," Dec. 30), I would like to say
this: Drug addiction is a problem that plagues our community; so is
the prison system. We have many problems in our city with addicts
stealing from cars and oftentimes stealing cars. This is a consequence
for the way we handle drug addiction.
Drug addicts need a warm, loving environment to overcome their
disease, not a prison cell. A relative of mine is schizophrenic, and
he used methamphetamines to self-medicate his affliction. Instead of
going into a rundown state hospital, he's now in a prison cell,
learning hate and fear. This is no way to treat a man with a disability.
When will Mr. Trotta and society wise up and treat all men equally?
Probably only when it's too late.
