MAYBE ADULTS SHOULD TAKE DRUG TESTS TOO

I hope every household who wastes the $10 on a drug-testing kit makes
sure to buy two extra kits so each parent can also provide a urine
sample for the teen to inspect.

And while they're at it, they should be willing to take a test for
alcohol and nicotine metabolites, even if they are a supposed
non-drinker and/or non-smoker. After all, just 'saying' that you are
drug-free is insufficient evidence. You must be willing to prove
yourself by giving a urine sample to the person asking the question.

If you want to know if your kids are using drugs, try this: Ask
them.

The only logical reason a teen would lie is if they do not trust the
person asking the question. If the trust level in your relationship is
so fragile that a urine test must be considered, then it's clear there
is work that needs to be done. And that work is not likely going to be
advanced by having either you or a teen provide a urine sample prior
to honest discussion.

Talk to your kids about drugs and drug use. And be prepared with
rational responses to your teen being either drug-free or someone who
has experimented with drug use. But don't degrade yourself or your
teen's self respect by opening your talk with comparisons of your
bodily fluids.
