KSS DRUG-FREE ZONE DESIGNED TO KEEP KIDS OUT OF TROUBLE: RCMP

With Ballenas Secondary students still learning about the new drug-free zone
around their school, Kwalikum Secondary staff are reflecting on their
success with the program in its second year of operation.

"I think we're seeing a decline in the amount of substances we see around
school," says KSS principal Darryl Craig.

While Craig says that is a good sign, he also says he considers the program
a success because of the other services that are being provided for
students.

"We're looking at different types of resources that students can access,
that students and parents can access," says Craig.

The drug free zone extends a defined boundary around the school. If anyone
is caught under the influence of, in possession of, or selling drugs, it is
an automatic RCMP call.

Craig says part of KSS's success definitely came from the amount of time
spent developing support for the drug-free zone before implementing it.

From the provincial solicitor general's office, to local businesses, Craig
says many levels of people were involved in the plan.

In November, KSS's vice-principals thanked community policing liaison Cst.
Sheila Roy especially for her help in the zone's successful launch.

Cpl. Garry Cox from the Oceanside RCMP says they are happy too with the
feedback they are getting.

"Kids feel safer going to school ... They have a better feeling at school,
knowing that they are safer," said Cox.

While KSS had the added challenge of encompassing the main drag of Qualicum
Beach in their drug-free zone, Cox says that has also been a success.

The commissioner who monitors the town square has told Cox there is less
drug activity there as well.

"I think we've had some tremendous success," says Cox, explaining the goals
of the program.

"We're not out to put kids in jail ... it's the exact opposite, we're trying
to keep them out of trouble."

Administration at Ballenas Secondary used this week to talk to individual
classes about the new drug free zone. Once those talks are complete the
policy will be in place.
