COURTS BLIND, TOO

Nothing could put a stunning exclamation point on your excellent series on
prisons and corrections than the news story in Sunday's paper about Mirwais
Ali being deported to Afghanistan as punishment for violations of the law.
In addition to the state's tunnel vision approach to imprisonment, the
court system also is unable or unwilling to consider personal circumstances
in applying the letter of the law. Deporting Ali in this instance is itself
shameful and wrong.
