NARCOTICS AGENTS CHECK WALGREENS

As Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics agents crossed the state collecting
Walgreens' record books Friday, the company said it will take more
precautions in selling pseudoephedrine.

An Enid Walgreens could lose its license to sell controlled drugs because
of possible violations of the state's pseudoephedrine control law. The
narcotics bureau is investigating all Walgreens in the state.

The bureau served the Enid store Thursday with an order to appear to defend
its registration Feb. 23.

Enid police said the store allowed customers to buy more than the 9 grams
allowed in a 30-day period, as set by a law passed in April 2004.

Pseudoephedrine, a cold medication, is used to make methamphetamine.

Mark Woodward, bureau spokesman, said he wasn't sure how many log books,
usually kept in three-ring binders, had been collected Friday.

Oklahoma has 65 Walgreens stores.

Walgreens' corporate communications issued a statement Friday stating the
company intends to beef up pseudoephedrine sales procedures, but declined
to give details for security reasons.

"While we were previously keeping a log book in our stores, we're now
taking it a step further," it stated. "We want to open a dialogue with the
state and we believe we'll work this out."

Woodward said the state is working on a computerized system to connect
pharmacies and prevent violations. Officials hope to have the system up in
a year.

at the Garfield County jail. [Name redacted], whom police didn't arrest
